12/14 - EBS/WVTC Seniors Place 4th In XC Nationals - The EBS/WVTC Seniors team placed 4th at the National Cross Country Championships held in Rocklin. Under heavy rain and high winds ten BAMMERS braved the 5-loop mud-slick course. Hoy's Excelsior was the unofficial winner of the senior division with two Massachusettes teams placing 2nd and 3rd (Greater Lowell and Greater Springfield). The scoring team members for EBS/WVTC over the 10K course were Joe Schieffer (41:15), Len Goldman (41:36), Fred Martin (41:44), Jim Granahan (43:15) and Doug Butt (43:32). 11/17 - The EBS/WVTC Masters Men, Seniors and Women all came up a bit short on the final XC meet of the year - the PAUSATF Champs at GG Park. The Seniors battle Tamalpa and Hoys for 2nd, the Masters had to settle for 5th place, while the EBS Women were one short of a full team. The Seniors ended the season as the Champions for their division, while the Masters dropped to 4th place just behind Hoys and River City. full story |

11/10 - The Masters and Seniors both took 2nd place at the Clarksburg 30K. Even a solid "B" masters team was scored (as Open). Ultrarunner Joe Schieffer stepped down to the 30K to place an impressive 4th in the seniors division in 2:03. Fellow ultra seniors Lion Caldwell and Clem Choy completed the seniors team. Full Story |
11/02 - The EBS/WVTC Masters team fought a tough battle with Hoys-Excelsior and the River City Rebels for both the second team spot in the race, and perhaps the second team standing in the Grand Prix. The EBS Women competed in there third XC race as a team placing 4th (unoff), while the senior men saw there 6-race win streak fall by the wayside as Tamalpa nipped them 15 to 17. Full Story

10/27-28 - Seniors Rewrite Marathon Record Book: One traveled south about 30 minutes, the other travelled halfway around the world with amazingly similar results: Steve Freitas and Lion Caldwell have claimed the top two spots on the EBS Senior Marathon list. First on Sunday, Steve hustled to a 3:07:32 time at the Silicon Valley Marathon setting a new EBS Senior record. On the other side of the world Lion took time out from an Ireland vacation to jump into the Dublin marathon. Lion finished in 3:07:47 - just 15 second behind the 1 day old Freitas mark. |

10/26 - While many of the seniors took this week off, the EBS/WVTC winning streak did not. Four seniors and two masters took part in this Saturday's Shoreline Open in Mountain View. Doug Butt and Jim Flanigan led the club with 2nd and 3rd place finishes in the 50+ category. Bernard Demai (5th) and John Monteverdi (6th) completed the winning team. 10/20 - Despite taking four of the top eight masters places at the Humboldt Half Marathon, EBS/WVTC was relegated to second place due to an unfortunate injury to their #5 man, at the turnaround. The team's #6 man, Mike Plummer (who had no intentions of making the scoring team) was there to save the day, and ensure the club a second place finish. Full Story |

Fred, doubling back from Saturday's XC meet, just nipped under 6 minute pace (18:31) to earn his title. 9/29 - Masters Second at Heritage 10K, by a SECOND! Jeff Teeters surprised even himself at the Heritage 10K Championships in Paso Robles. His 33:59 after hardly being able to walk two weeks ago, saved the Masters team from slipping to 3rd place in this 4x-Points event. A quick addition of the times after the race had EBS/WVTC and Hoys in a virtual tie, assuming Hoys dropped down their top 2 seniors. However, PAUSATF rules require all times to be rounded UP to the next second. This gave us the edge 174:03 to 174:04! Not only did the team collect $200 for the runner-up spot, but also leap-frogged Hoys for 2nd in the Grand Prix by 2 points. Mauricio Maia, Gerry Valverde, Fletcher Lesley and Tim Keenan filled out the team. The EBS/WVTC Seniors had a very solid team but had to settle for 4th place behind Hoys, Tamalpa and a surprising Wednesday Night Laundry Club. Len Goldman ran a season-best 37:40, followed by Fred Martin's 38:11 (also a season best). Julios Ratti ran a strong 41:12 to complete the team. Times in RACING Section. |

09/21 - With the help of a senior drop-down, both the EBS/WVTC Masters and Seniors teams claimed victory at the Aggie Invite 8K XC meet in Davis. With the Seniors dominating the field in a 2-3-7-11 finish, Len Goldman was able to lend his services to the short Masters team. This allowed the Masters to nip the Golden Valley Harriers 41 to 43. The Seniors, with 12 points still nipped Empire (15) for the win, wth the Chips close behind at 18 pts EBS/WVTC was also fortunate enough to grab the 2nd and 3rd place individual places in both the master and senior divisions. Thom Trimble (2nd in 27:54) and Fletcher Lesley (3rd in 28:31) for the Masters division, and Len Goldman (2nd in 31:13) and Fred Martin (3rd in 31:21) in the Senior Division. Team Scores |
09/14 - Ken Gregorich outran the entire field to win the Sierra Nevada Endurance Run on Saturday, 9/14. This is Ken's first win on the PA Grand Prix as he fended off Empire Runners' Eric Bohn in a time of 8 hours and 27 minutes. Bohn was 14 minutes back. Joe Schieffer placed 11th (second senior) in a time of 10:28. Ken's win should vault him from 11th place in the masters standings to around 5th place. Joe's placing moves him into first place in the Seniors Ultra Standings.
09/14 - A record TWENTY Striders took to the hills of Crystal Springs Cross Country Race, and things went as well as could be expected. The Seniors Team not only won the division, but the "B" team took a close third, just behind the Spartans. The "B" team nipped rival Tamalpa based on the faster 4th man time.
The other big surprise was the EBS Women's Masters team. Fresh off their debut at GGP, they surprized the field at Crystal by placing 2nd, behind the Impala powerhouse. The Masters Mens team also took 2nd behind the Ags with a strong 6-7-8-12-14 finish. See RACING Section for times
09/07 - Eighteen Striders ventured to the dirt of Golden Gate Park allowing the EBS/WVTC team to field complete teams on the Seniors, Masters and Open levels and the women EBSers to field a complete Masters team in the 3rd cross country race of the season. The men were led by dual 4th place finishes by Thom Trimble in the Masters division and Joe Schieffer in the Seniors division. For Schieffer it was his first step down to the cross country circuit in 6 years and led the Seniors to their 2nd win in three races this season. So dominate were the seniors, with Jim Granahan and Fred Martin completing the scoring three, that they were able to lend the talents of Jim Flanigan, Doug Butt, Julios Ratti and John Monteverdi to complete an Open team with lone true Open runner Mike McGuire. On the Masters level following Trimble was Chatham Ross, making his 2002 xcountry debut, and always solid Fletcher Lesley. The race also features the return of the EBS women to the racing circuit. A total of 5 women raced led by Christine Chapon.
08/24 - The EBS/WVTC Seniors not only won the first Cross Country race of the season they dominated the race and made a statement about their depth for the upcoming season. Sweeping the top three scoring positions at the UC Santa Cruz XC Challenge were Fred Martin, Len Goldman and Jim Flanigan. The remaining seniors, Doug Butt, Bernard Demai and John Monteverdi all would have been top 10 scorers, but instead lent a hand to the Masters team - where many of the racing regulars still seem to be on summer vacation. Maurico Maia took the 4th Masters scoring position and Fletcher Lesley, returning from injury, took the 8th position. With the seniors depth completing the team, the Masters were able to capture 4th place. Expect to see many more highlights from the Seniors this season. They are fit and expect to be 5 to 7 deep at most races.
08/24 - The USATF Trail National Championships made a visit to the Bay Area in the form of the Golden Gate Headlands 50k Endurance Run. Nine Striders accepted the challenge and conquered the course that features 7 major hills and a cumulative climb of over 7000 feet. Ken Gregorich led the Striders with time of 4:35.58 - a minute and a half faster than his 2001 time - good enough for 6th in the 40-49 age group. Joe Schieffer took 5th in the 50-59 age group with a time of 5:01:52. New EBS Ultra member Miles Welze took 22nd in the 30-39 age group with a time of 5:14:14. Remember this was a National Championship with runners from all over the nation! Also running well were Eric Ellison, Clement Choy, Greorge Forman and Malcom Scotchler. On the womens side Lisa Hensen took 12th in the 40-49 age group, just ahead of Sarah Spelt who finished in 13th.
7/9/02 - Skyline 50K Volunteers Needed! ....Runners Too! EBS's Ken Gregorich is the new race director for the Skyline 50K, which is scheduled for Sunday, August 4. The race starts at Lake Chabot Marina in Castro Valley at 7 AM. For more information go to http://home.attbi.com/~laue11/skyline50k/home.html
The East Bay Triple Crown is a grueling series of three challenging races completed less than a month apart. The cumulative times at The Tilden Tough, the Lake Chabot Trail Half Marathon and Woodminister X-C race determines the Triple Crown winner. Three Striders nabbed jewels in the crown, finishing the series with "Win, Place and Show " honors. The Win goes to Christine Chapon who ran away with the overall womens title by over 4 minutes. The Place goes to Jeff Teeters who showed consistant racing through the whole series for 2nd overall in the open mens competition. Fred Martin took the Show in the 50+ seniors division.
05-27- A fast course and perfect racing conditions allowed a number of striders to shine at the Pacific Sun 10k. The EBS/WVTC Masters team appears to have secured a 2nd place team finish with strong performances from Thom Trimble and Jeff Teeters - both breaking into the 33's with times of 33:37 and 33:47 respectively. The other scoring masters, Gerry Valverde, Tim Keenan and Mauricio Maia all finished in the low to mid 34's. Joe Schieffer led the Seniors with a 4th place individual finish in 36:17. Showing tremendous range after winning a 50 miler in April, Joe's time was good enough for #2 on the all-time EBS seniors list behind David Taylors' 1994 35:54. Early tabulations have the Seniors in 3rd place due to solid supporting performances by Len Goldman, 38:10 and Fred Martin 38:23.

2/24 - BAMMERS Win Houlihans! The masters used their 5-man depth to edge the Reebok Aggies at the Houlihan's 12K Champs. Chris Jaggers, Thom Trimble, Tim Keenan, Mauricio Maia, and new member Gerry Valverde outran the Aggies by a mere 37 seconds to claim the title. This is the first road win for the new masters team. Their team time of 3:30:43 was the fastest masters team time by any club since 1997. The Seniors team of Joe Schieffer, Len Goldman and Jim Granahan took third in their division. Joe's 45:01 was a new club senior record and good enough for 5th in the race. An EBS/WVTC Open team - Mike Maguire, John Lehman, Tony Fong, Jim Flanigan and Fred Martin also scored for the club. Go to RACING page for individual times. |

2/9 - EBS/WVTC Masters Thom Trimble, Tim Keenan, Chatham Ross, Tony Fong and Fletcher Lesley and Seniors Doug Butt, Len Goldman, Jim Flanigan, Jim Granahan and John Monteverdi competed in the USATF's National Cross Country Championship in Vancouver, Washington 2/9/02. On a rare dry, cool day, the "younger" boys finished as 6th Masters Team, a placing that featured a courageous performance by Fletcher Lesley, who hobbled through the winding, muddy 6K course with a serious injury to stumble in as fifth man. Chatham Ross ran half of the last lap without a shoe, which had been sucked off his feet by the mud. The club's Senior Team placed in the medals, finishing as 3rd Seniors Team behind the Snohamish (Washington) Roadrunners and the Boulder Track Club, with a placing tht featured individual Silver and Bronze Medal-winning performances for speedy guys Doug Butt and Len Goldman, respectively. Official times not available as of this time, but will be posted as soon as they are available. |
1/27 - Two strider elite masters runners took shots at the club 5k record Sunday with identical results - at the end of the day Mike Ignatius' 1995 Masters record of 15:55 held as Chris Jaggers and Thom Trimble both posted impressive early season times of 16:18. Jaggers' time at the Pacific Shoreline 5k earned him 4th place overall and an easy Masters win. Trimble also won the Masters division at the Z95.7 5k while taking 5th overall in the race. Look for Jaggers to make another record attempt soon or at the Carlsbad 5000 on April 7th. Trimble has penciled in a record attempt for the Los Gatos all comers track meet on February 23rd.
