2001

12/8/01 - EBS/WVTC Masters team finished 4th overall, 2nd Masters, and 2nd Open team at the Christmas Relays. The team of Fletcher Lesley, Brian McGwire, Thom Trimble and Chatham Ross narrowly missed winning the Masters title, but were run down by a strong Silver State team. However, since the top 2 open teams were BOTH from Hoy's (only one counts) our club was awarded 2nd place in the Open division, which pays much better than 2nd master. The club's Senior Team also placed 2nd in their division. In order of running: Doug Butt, Len Goldman, John Monteverdi and Jim Granahan. This was the first team scoring on the road series for the 50+ boys.

12/02 - The EBS/WVTC Masters team placed 5-6-7 in the PA Masters division to grab 2nd place team in that division, Heavy rains and strong winds (25-30+ mph) kept times very modest. Tim Keenan and Thom Trimble worked together the entire race to earn Tim a much needed top-6 finish. Maurico Maia ran an amazing 24+ miles but bonked big time over the closing 2 miles. The team had to settle for the $200 second place award as Hoys put two men in front of the EBS/WVTC trio. By placing 5th PA master Tim was able to sneak into 10th place (by 3 pts) in the season-end Grand Prix, thus earning comp entries for 2002.  Jim Granahan placed 13th in the Seniors division (9th PA) with a 3:18:39. Jim combined with Fletcher Lesley (2:55) and Mike Plummer (3:22) to form the "B" team, which may have grabbed 4th place, ahead of the Aggies "A" team. Results on RACING page.

12/01 - Brian McGuire traveled to Mobile Alabama to take part in the USATF Cross Country National Championships. Brian capped his impressive 2001 late season run with a 17th place finish in a time of 20:44 for the 6k course. In team competition the Pacific Association swept the masters races with the Reebok Aggies winning the mens competition and the Impala Racing Team dominating the competition on the way to the womens national championship.

11/25 - Riva Rahl blazed to a new EBS 10k record at the Run to the Far Side. Her time of 38:09 narrowly eclipsed the 1994 best run by Amber Duncan. Riva finished second overall in the race, winning the 20-29 age division. Other noteworthy Run to the Far Side performances included Robert Gormley winning the Super Senior division and setting a new EBS best in 39:05; Joe Schieffer placing 3rd in the Senior division with a 5th best EBS Senior time of 37:42. Finally, Chatham Ross won the Masters division of the 5k race with a time of 17:23.

11/10 - Joe Schieffer completed the Helen Klien 50 Miler in a time on 6:47.04 to finish as the first Senior and 3rd overall. Joe's placing should be good enough to secure 2nd place in the Masters division for the 2000/2001 Ultra season (yes, he is now a Senior but is competing against the youngsters to keep them honest this year). Also running well at the 50 miller was Clement Choy who finished in 7:56.04, good enough for 12 overall and 6th senior. Full results can be found on the PA USATF website.

Near The Finish of the 2001 Cross Country Championships

11/18/01 - The combined EBS/WVTC Seniors won their first team race, upsetting the favored Tamalpa team, at the muddy, challenging PA USAT&F Cross Country Championships (listed as 10K but really slightly shorter at 6.05 miles) in Golden Gate Park on November 18, 2001. EBS results. The Seniors Team, led by Doug Butt (6th S) and Len Goldman (7th S) (in identical times), were joined by John Monteverdi (8th S) to make up EBS/WVTC's scoring team. Jim Flanigan was actually 8th scoring Senior and would have capped off the Seniors EBS/WVTC team, but he will not be eligible until January (due to PA USATF Scoring Rules). Also contributing by displacing other senior runners were Julios Ratti and Malcolm Scotchler.

Meanwhile, the EBS Masters Team capped off a highly successful cross-country season with a strong second place finish with the scoring team made up of Thom Trimble (7th M), Brian McGuire (10th M), Mauricio Maia (15th M), Chatham Ross (16th M) and Tim Keenan (21st M) with place displacers Mark Piccillo and Tony Fong. Thom ran a surprising 34:48 given the toll taken on the competitors in the previous week's 30K. The Masters were 2nd to the perennial champion Aggies.

Also of note -- the comeback of the EBS Women's contingent is almost complete. But for a runner who did not show up, the EBS women would have fielded a complete team and would have scored in the competition. The EBS women at Sunday's race were, in order of finish, Christine Chapon, Amy Lam, Malia Dinell and BZ Churchman. Congratulations to Malia and BZ for their stalwart dedication to resurrecting the women's program after last year's trauma.

Finally, stalwart open runners John Lehman and Mike Maguire, and senior runner John McDougall, also competed for EBS. Full results can be found on the PA USATF website. More pictures can be found at BARN.

11/11/01 - Aging EBS stars Thom Trimble and Tim Keenan proved that there is plenty of life left in their legs. Trimble covered the Clarksburg 30k race in an impressive 1:51:40 - a full minute faster than his 2000 time and good enough for 4th in the Masters division. Keenan, a recent graduate to the Masters ranks, has served notice that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the longer PA races. He followed up his 3rd place Masters finish at the Humboldt Half with a 1:52:49 at Clarksburg, good enough for 7th Master.

11/03/01 - With a strong lead pack the EBS/WVTC Masters team took first at the John Lawson Tamalpa Cross Country Challenge. Mauricio Maia (4th), Thom Trimble (7th), Fletcher Lesley (8th) and Brian McGuire (10th) gave the EBS/WVTC team 4 scorers in the top 10. Tony Fong rounded out the scoring 5 with a 23rd place finish and newcomer Jeff Greve and senior drop down Julios Ratti helped displace runners from other teams. The senior trio of Len Goldman (6th), James Flanigan (9th) and John Monteverdi (12th) continued their hot running by taking 2nd place overall. In all 18 striders competed at the Challenge.

10/28/01 - Brian McGuire, continuing the tradition of EBS masters winning 5K's outright, easily won the Lafayette Reservoir Run 5K in a time of 16:54. Brian finished over a minute ahead of the second place finisher. EBS's Bill Brusher took the 50-59 division and placed 8th overall in a time of 19:41. Full results.

10/14/01 - EBS Ultra runners keep racking up miles and points: As the extended 2000/2001 Ultra season winds down the EBS mens' team is holding on to a strong second place and Joe Schieffer remains in 2nd place in the Masters standings. On October 13th Joe won the Seniors division of the Dick Collins Firetrail 50 Miler - however as a recent graduate to the Senior ranks he has chosen to score as a Master for the rest of the year. Also running well at the Firetrail 50 Miler was Don James who placed 3rd overall in the Senior division.

10/14/01 - Tim Keenan outkicked two runners over the last 200m to win the Primos 5K in San Ramon. Tim's time of 16:27 bested the 1,600 other runners and was only 7 seconds off his PR. This also places him 5th on the EBS All-Time Masters list. Len Goldman took the Seniors title in the accompanying 10K. Super-Senior sensation Robert Gormley was close behind in 39:21 which sets a new EBS record for that division.

10/7/01 - Robert Gromley, EBS member who races with Tamalpa, recently put together an impressive 10 days of racing. On 9/29 he participated in a Tamalpa 60+ age group 4x1600m relay world record. Gromley's 1600 split of 5:34.1 helped Tamalpa to a 21:40.2 world age group record. On 10/7 Gromley headed to Chicago where he took second in the 60-65 division at the Chicago Marathon. Gromley's time was an impressive 3:10.38!

Suet-Fei Li
10/6/01 - 14 Striders at Presidio XC - While the EBS women nearly fielded a full team (4), the Mens Masters and Seniors gave the field a good run. Suet-Fei Li led the women's quartet with a 47th place finish. She was followed by BZ Churchman, Malia Dinell and new member Amy Lam. The EBS/WVTC Masters men gave the Aggies a battle to the finish, placing 2nd in a close 41-37 score. It looked like a dual meet as EBS/WVTCers and Ags took 7 of the top 8 spots. Tamalpa finished a strong 3rd with GVH fourth. The Senior's squad was 2nd behind Tamalpa, and was led by Doug Butt's 4th place finish. See RACING section for times and places.
10/6/01 - Ironman Stowers - Steve Stowers, a regular at EBS track workouts, placed an unofficial 101st at the Ironman Triathlon World Championships in Hawaii. On a day where reports had the wind so strong that officials had to hold bikes down for athletes as they tried to remount after being blown off, Steve broke the 10 hour barrier with a time of 9:59.44. He finished with a 3:19.46 marathon after a swim phase of 1:03.32 and a time of 5:31.31 for the 112 mile ride.

9/30/01 - EBS/WVTC Masters Take 7 of top 17 - On what proved to be a fast course on a fast day, the masters mens team took 2nd in their division by placing 5 in the top 12, and 7 in the top 17. Jeff Teeters (34:20, 11th) and Tim Keenan (34:25, 12th) filled out the scoring team. Chatham Ross (34:35, 12th) and Dave Stephens (34:55, 17th) also had fine races. 9/15/01 - EBS/WVTC Masters Give Aggies a Run at Crystal Springs - Despite having only 4 masters at this challenging 4.19 miler, EBS/WVTC made the Aggies work harder for the win - placing 3 men ahead of their 5th man. A senior drop down assured the club of another second place finish. Two EBS women also took part in the earlier 2.95 miler. BZ Churchman and Malia Dinell (pictured) are still working on reinforcements to the team, in hopes of scoring a full squad this season. Club results in RACING section.
